The Ten Commandments: VII–Do Not Commit Adultery

FAITHFULNESS IN ALL THINGS

God gave us the Bible so we could know Him. He reveals His character, and He shows us how He designed us to live. The Bible shows us what God expects, and how we can please Him.

His commandment concerning marriage is quite simple. Be faithful. Do not commit adultery. Just as murder begins with angry thoughts in our hearts, Jesus taught we are guilty of adultery if we carry lustful thoughts in our heart.

God is always, always, always concerned with the condition of our hearts. He knows if we get our hearts right, the right behavior will flow out of them. God desires faithfulness and integrity in all of our relationships, and in all of our actions. It begins with a heart in tune with His.

God established marriage. He designed marriage and family, for mutual support and encouragement (Genesis 2:24; Ephesians 5:21-25; Colossians 3:18-21). God created marriage; He determines the terms. As in all His commandments, obedience brings blessing. A marriage in which both husband and wife keep God at the center, and as first priority, brings peace, harmony and security. As husband and wife each grow closer to God, they naturally grow closer to each other as well. Failing to seek God and His ways causes us to miss the blessings He intends for us. God hates divorce because of the pain it brings into the lives of people affected by it.

When my husband and I were first married, we had a lot to learn. My husband wanted to do things his way. I resisted, because I wanted to do things my way. Conflicts arose. Often. Over time, we learned everything works much better if we do things God’s way. We are still learning.

Throughout the Bible, marriage is given as an illustration of God’s relationship with His people. For your Creator will be your husband; the Lord of Heaven’s Armies is his name! He is your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel, the God of all the earth (Isaiah 54:5). The church is referred to as the Bride of Christ (Ephesians 5:25-32; Revelation 21:2; Revelation 19:7; 2 Corinthians 11:2).

If we put anything ahead of our relationship with God, it is idolatry. God refers to it as spiritual adultery (Psalm 106:36-39). He desires us to be faithful to Him. God is faithful. He will fulfill every one of His promises. He is faithful despite our unfaithfulness. In our human weakness, we fall short of what we should be. But He is patient and loving as He works on our hearts. God wants a loving relationship with His people. Not an authoritarian relationship, but an intimate, loving relationship. He is our Protector, and our Provider.

Our faithfulness in all things rises out of our relationship to God. It begins with being in right relationship with God, through knowing Jesus as Lord and Savior (Romans 10:9-10,13). Faithfulness is produced in us by the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22). As we draw close to God, and fill our hearts and minds with His thoughts from the Scriptures, and yield to His Spirit, He grows us in faithfulness. He puts the right desires in our hearts (Psalm 37:4), so we can live in faithfulness to Him, and with faithfulness in all things.

You shall not commit adultery. Exodus 20:14

Thanks for the post, Phyllis. Even for those not married, it is a great reminder that faithfulness and following God is the most important thing. Then other relationships are more solid.
