Trust in the Lord

Trust in the Lord

It’s embroidered on pillows. It’s displayed on plaques. It is often one of the first passages committed to memory. But it is more than a slogan or a good thought to memorize. It is foundational. Something to build a life around.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take (Proverbs 3:5-6).

We can trust in God, because He is trustworthy. Faith is knowing He is worthy of our trust, and centering our lives around Him. It is trusting Him with everything in us.

We cannot trust in ourselves, or our knowledge, because we are flawed and our knowledge is incomplete. Our understanding is inadequate. It is full of gaps and distortions. Our perception of reality is clouded. We don’t have all the facts. We can trust in the character of God. We can know He will do what is right, because His character is perfect. Faith is knowing we don’t have to fear because he is in control, and He knows what He is doing. We can trust His plan.

If we trust in our own understanding, our resources are limited. We don’t see a solution to the problems that confound us. We quickly learn of our own weakness and insufficiency. Fortunately, the answers to the dilemmas life raises don’t depend on us, our reasoning, or whatever resources we can grab. Depending on ourselves brings worry and fear, because we know we are inadequate.

But the Lord is not limited. He has promised to be with us. He has promised to hold us up and carry us through (Isaiah 41:10, 13). As we read His Word, and allow His Spirit to teach us through it, He changes us.

Trusting His plan is believing Jesus’ s life, death, and resurrection are sufficient for our salvation. We can’t do anything to earn it. If we confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord, and believe in our hearts God raised Him from the dead, we will be saved from judgment for our sin. We will live eternally with Him in His kingdom. The only “work” required of us is to believe in Jesus (John 6:29). When we do, He opens the eyes of our mind to see who He is. We can only scratch the surface, but we begin to understand how good, how wise, and how powerful He is. He is perfect in all of His ways.

We are simply incomplete apart from God, but in Him, we have everything. We can rest in His ability and His sufficiency. His all-knowing, all-powerful wisdom and strength will see us through whatever difficulties we may encounter. In Him we have peace. Everything is going to work out the way He intends. We can trust in the Lord. With all of our heart.

The reward for trusting him will be the salvation of your souls. 1 Peter 1:9

I have failed Him, but He has NEVER failed me. It may take time for me to realize why His way is best sometimes, but His way IS always best.

We are all works in progress. God is faithful; we are slow to appreciate how perfect He is in all His ways.

Thank you, Joni. Our security is in knowing He is.
