God’s provision is no coincidence. George Müller, who lived during the 1800’s, served as a pastor, then devoted his ministry to caring for orphans. At a time when only a few orphanages existed in England, and those that existed charged fees to care for children, many orphans were either sent to live with relatives or sent to workhouses. Müller prayed about starting an orphanage. He wanted to provide a place where no orphan would be turned away. He wanted the children to be educated and given vocational training. He believed God would provide, and the money began to come in.
After he started the orphanage, some years were lean. Müller believed in prayer and trusted in God’s provision. At times a small monetary donation would come in and be just enough to provide the food needed for that day. Müller recorded a few occasions when he and the children sat down at mealtime, even though there was no food. Müller prayed, and thanked God for His provision. Within moments someone would knock on the door with some bread and milk, or meat, or vegetables. Always just in time. Coincidence? Hardly.
I recently heard on the radio a woman named Carol tell her story of God’s provision. It was during the time when she was a young, single mom, recently divorced. One day, as she got her daughter and herself ready to go to church, she discovered she only had a couple of diapers remaining. At the time, her bills were current and she had food in the house, but it would be several days before she would get any more money to buy diapers. She had never prayed about diapers before, but decided this was the time to do that. She asked God to somehow provide the diapers she needed.
Then there was a knock on the door. It was unusual for anyone to come to her door early on a Sunday morning. When Carol opened the door, she found a woman she knew. The woman gave Carol a card she had been carrying in her car for a couple weeks. She meant to give it to Carol before this, but just decided to drop it off on her way to church. Carol thanked her, and the woman went on her way. Carol continued doing what she needed to do to get ready to leave.
Before she left her home, she opened the card. It was a heart-felt note, a twenty-dollar bill, and a coupon for diapers.
God knows what we need. He watches over us. When we lean on Him, He faithfully provides. God’s provision may come in tangible ways, such as food or diapers, or we may experience it in multiple other ways. Every believer has the Holy Spirit living inside of them. Jesus promised the Holy Spirit would lead us into all truth. He guides our decisions. He brings to mind what we need in the moment. Just as we are ready to counter a statement made to us, or in our hearing, we remember a Scripture, Avoid foolish arguments. Just when we think we can’t do the right thing, because it is too hard, God provides the strength. He enables us to love and forgive those who trouble us. He comforts us in our sorrow. When someone is trying to mislead us, God provides discernment to recognize something isn’t right.
We are dependent on God for life itself, and everything we have is a gift of his grace. As we live in dependence on Him, He proves Himself faithful again and again.
The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease . . . The Lord is good to those who depend on him, to those who search for him. Lamentations 3:22, 25
