What we think about matters. It determines our feelings, and our attitude. Thinking too much about the things that inundate us through the news cycle can lead to depression and anxiety. Thinking about an upcoming encounter with an unpleasant person can fill us with dread. Thinking about past hurts can make us angry and resentful. Thinking about our grandchildren can makes us smile.
Just as it is true that we are what we eat, we are what we think about.
The Bible tells us to think about these things: whatever is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, and commendable. We are to think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. The Bible also tells us to fix our thoughts and our eyes on Jesus. Jesus embodies everything praiseworthy.
Here are a few suggestions of things to occupy our minds in a healthy way:
Think about the riches we have in Christ. We have redemption through the blood He shed on the cross. Through Him, we have forgiveness of our sins, according to His grace. We have a rich inheritance. All believers in Christ have received the Holy Spirit as a guarantee of everything that is to come. We have the immeasurable power of God working in our lives–the same power He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead. Ephesians 2:7 reminds us we have the immeasurable riches of His grace, forever.
Think about the privilege of prayer. We can approach the Creator of the universe at any time. Prayer is our connection to Him. We can praise Him for who He is and thank Him for all He has done. We can pour out all of our needs and concerns. He listens and is ready to help. He strengthens and guides us.
2 Peter 1:3 tells us we have everything we need to live a godly life. What confidence there is in that.
We are never alone. God has promised to be with us always, and never abandon us.
We experience God’s protection and provision daily–moment to moment, now and forever.
We can know that suffering has a purpose and an end–Jesus said we would experience hard things in this world, but He has overcome the world.
As a child of God, we get to hang around with His other kids. The deep relationships we have with other believers are a tremendous source of joy now, but they will last through all eternity.
We can live in peace. We can experience peace even in the midst of chaos and uncertainty, because we live in Christ’s victory.
God has promised a glorious future.
We have all this and more as an anchor for our souls.
What we think about matters. The riches of this world are uncertain, but God gives true riches that last.
Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Philippians 4: 8

I love this! Our thoughts can consume us if we let them! I completed a Bible study a few years ago that contained practical strategies for changing our thinking patterns! It is doable with God’s help!
Yes, only by His strength! Thanks Deanna.
I SO needed this very blog post today, Phyllis.
Thank you!
Thank you, Nora. I’m glad you found it encouraging.
Thank you for sharing about this, Phyllis. It is very important to think about what I’m thinking about. I ask God each day to direct my thinking and help me use my brain the way He wants. That helps me focus on why I’m really on this earth – to serve Him. I’m grateful for God’s blessings and that He does help me and redirects me when necessary.
To God be the glory. Thanks, Joni.
