We live in uncertain times. News of world events can at times rattle us. We hear reports, and varying reactions to what is reported. People may not have all the facts, yet speculation abounds. As others suggest reasons to panic, anxiety stirs within us. We don’t know what may happen next.
In uncertain times, it is wise to focus on what is true–and certain. Trouble is not surprising. Jesus told us we would have trouble in this world. He said there would be wars and rumors of wars. He said there would be famines and earthquakes. He warned of betrayals and deception.
None of this is new. The world has been in decline ever since Adam and Eve turned away from God’s authority in the garden. When sin entered the human experience, it brought with it chaos, confusion, and an endless variety of consternation.
But Jesus also told us to take heart. He has overcome the world. He told us we don’t have to let our hearts be troubled. This world will pass away, but every word of God will be fulfilled. God is sovereign. He controls all of history. He controls world events. He raises up kings and nations, and He brings them down. He has a plan, and He is working it out according to His timetable. Nothing surprises Him. He knows the end from the beginning. His understanding is beyond our comprehension. He knows everything.
God provides counsel to us for all the uncertain times we may face in life. He tells us not to be anxious, or worry about anything. He reminds us to pray about everything. He tells us to rejoice in the confident hope we have in Him, to be patient in trouble, and keep on praying.
He tells us to trust Him, with all of our heart, and not depend on our own understanding of things. We don’t see the complete picture of things the way God does. We can count on Him to guide us. He doesn’t give us the full roadmap of everything ahead, but when we look to Him, He guides our next steps.
God’s ways are not our ways. His thoughts are nothing like our thoughts. We see things differently than He does. We look at the way things appear on the outside. He always sees the heart of an issue.
God did not give us a spirit of fear and timidity. Instead, He has equipped us with sound minds, discipline, and the power of the Holy Spirit. He counsels us not to be conformed to the pattern of this world, but to be transformed by renewing our minds with His thoughts. His thoughts are revealed to us as we read the Bible and pray. He is the source of all wisdom. As we seek Him, He grants us the wisdom we need for each new day.
The world can be a confusing place. It is at times hostile to everything reasonable and good. The shifting sands of worldly opinions can be shaky ground. In the midst of whatever is confusing and unsettling, we have a solid Rock on which to stand. When we fix our attention on Him, we find security and peace.
The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. Psalm 18:2 NLT
You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! Trust in the Lord always, for the Lord God is the eternal Rock. Isaiah 26:3-4 NLT
