God Cares

God cares about our world, and He cares about our lives. He is sovereignly in charge of world history, and world events. Things may occur outside His will, but nothing can thwart His plans for time and eternity. God cares about all the big things in life, but He also cares about the small details that are important to us in the moment. He may even show His sense of humor as He intervenes in them.

One example of God’s sense of humor goes back to when our children were growing up. Our daughter, Christie, from the time she could speak, voiced her desire to have a kitten. She loved kittens, and loved the thought of having one. My husband, Doug, however, is not fond of cats. In fact, he has an intense (probably unreasonable) dislike of them. So, every time Christie asked if she could have a kitten, my husband said no–no way, never. No cats. Besides, we already had a dog, and Doug didn’t see the need for a cat too.

When Christie was about eight, and still asking for a kitten, we decided to get her a hamster, as a compromise. We thought if she could have a pet that was hers, it might fill the void. Her fondness for the hamster quickly developed. She named him, “Love.”

Christie tried to be responsible about caring for it. One day, she took it outside to clean its cage. She confined Love in a paper bag while she took care of the cage. After a short time, she realized he had chewed through the bag and escaped. We never saw him again. Christie was devastated.

Shortly after that, friends from church invited Christie over for the day, to play with their daughter. In the middle of the afternoon Christie called me. “Mommy, they gave me a kitten. Can I keep it?”

I had no idea what I would say to my husband, but there was no way I was going to tell her she couldn’t keep it. When Doug came home, he surprised me. He expressed no anger, only confusion. His initial words were, “What is this cat doing here?” I explained. Apparently he too didn’t want to disappoint our daughter. After some pondering He said, “Okay, we will try it for two weeks.”

We named the cat, “Boxer.” He had four white paws, and somehow the name seemed appropriate. For two weeks, Boxer followed Doug everywhere around the house. If Doug stopped moving, Boxer rubbed against his ankles. If Doug sat down, Boxer jumped into his lap. Somewhere during that time, we found out Boxer was born on Doug’s birthday. Doug decided that, for a cat, he wasn’t too bad. At the end of Boxer’s probation, Doug said, “Okay, he can stay.”

Immediately after that, Boxer began to ignore him.

Over time, Boxer and Doug bonded, and Doug actually enjoyed having him as part of the family. Boxer lived with, and entertained us, for the rest of Christie’s growing up years.

God knew how great the desire of a little girl’s heart to have a kitten. He knew how to make that happen in spite of her parents. God cares about His creation. Nothing can thwart His purposes and plans.

But the Lord’s plans stand firm forever; his intentions can never be shaken. Psalm 33:11 NLT

Steve and I got married in 2004 and moved to NC in 2005. Near the end of 2006, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and had surgery in November and again in mid December because they didn’t get clear margins with the first surgery. I praise the Lord for bringing me to NC BEFORE the cancer was detected. I could have had the surgery in the Bay Area, but I had no family support there except for my new husband. But by making it here first, I had a ton of family support nearby! Thank you Lord for taking care of my physical needs and my support needs!

I have been known to laugh out loud at things God has done for/to me. Even the smallest thing lets me know: A. He has a sense of humor and B. He loves me dearly. It feels like our little secret and makes my heart smile.

Praise God. He does know how to make us smile. Thanks, Elizabeth.

Thanks for the sweet story, Phyllis! There are so many ways I could list how God cares, there isn’t enough paper in the universe. It reminds me that’s why we will praise Him for eternity – it will take that long. 😉
