Riches Worth The Digging

It is worth the digging to find real riches. Early in my Christian life I, of course, knew of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I was acquainted with the four Gospels. I read some of the Psalms & Proverbs. Along with most Christians, Bible stories such as Jonah & the big fish, Noah & the flood, and Moses & the Red Sea were familiar to me. When I began to study the whole Bible, I discovered I had been missing a lot.

Treasures abound throughout the Bible. Here are a few gems I found when I dug below the surface:

From Isaiah 57:15–God says, I live in a high and holy place, but also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit. The God who is exalted above all, and greater than we can comprehend, wants a relationship with us.

From Zephaniah 3:17For the Lord your God is living among you . . . with his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs. The Lord sings over His people. God’s relationship to us is a love relationship. He cares for us as a loving Father who cradles His child in His arms and sings to calm him.

From Isaiah 45:3 We learn I will give you treasures hidden in the darkness–secret riches. God brings treasure out of darkness. Hidden away in our darkest times are great truths, great consolations, precious things He wants to teach us. Some things we can’t learn any other way but by going through some dark times.

From Psalm 147:4He determines the number of the stars and calls them all by name. God knows each star individually, and calls each one by name. Since He cares that much about the trillions of stars, we can know He cares about each one of us personally. He takes personal interest in every moment of our lives.

From Job 26:14– (Considering the wonders of His creation) And these are but the outer fringe of his works; how faint the whisper we hear of him! Who, then can understand the thunder of his power? The mountains, the oceans, the stars and clouds overhead–all of that and so much more are just the outer fringe of who He is and what He can do. Our God is infinite. We will spend all of eternity learning the extent of His power and greatness– and praise Him for it.

From Isaiah 46:10 God says, I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is to come. I say, ‘My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please. God knows everything that will happen, from the beginning of time, as we know it, until it ends. Nothing catches Him by surprise. Long before it happened, He revealed to Daniel the Babylonian kingdom would fall. The Media and Persian empires would replace it, followed by Greece (Daniel 8:20-21). History confirms it happened just as God said. Hundreds of years before Jesus was born in Bethlehem, Micah foretold it (Micah 5:2). Long before Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, Zechariah said He would (Zechariah 9:9). From all the many things prophesied in the Bible that have already happened, we can have confidence about what God tells us that has not happened yet.

Reading the whole Bible is like finding a treasure chest, or a mine filled with precious metals. The deeper we dig through it, the more amazing riches we find. It is worth the digging.

Cry out for insight, and ask for understanding. Search for them as you would for silver; seek them like hidden treasure. Then you will understand what it means to fear the Lord, and you will gain knowledge of God. Proverbs 2:3-5

Thank you for the post, Phyllis. I’m so thankful for all the treasure in God’s Word. And that God views us as His treasures.
