Finding Truth

Finding truth can be a challenge. We may attempt to read a contract carefully, but the legalese often keeps us from understanding what we are signing. We may listen to the news to learn what is happening, but the bias of the reporter may bend the truth by leaving out relevant facts. We may listen to a politician’s speech to try to learn where he stands on an issue, only to realize that though a lot of words were spoken, nothing of substance was actually said.

Language gives us a means of communication. However, sometimes it is used to cloud truth instead of clarifying it. Our culture distorts truth by redefining it. Finding truth may seem illusive. Whatever the politicians, marketers, or anyone else may try to make of it, truth is not subjective. It is not a matter of opinion or consensus. Truth is what is true for all times and all people. We find truth by looking to the source of all truth.

There is one source of information we can count on to be true. The Bible is God’s word to us. The Bible shows us what is true. God and His word are the plumb line by which truth is measured. It is the standard we use to discern what is true. Some of what is written may not be clear, but with a little digging, and comparing Scripture with Scripture, even the obscure passages become more understandable. We may not grasp it all, but we can count on every word being true.

God has given us the Bible to reveal Himself, and to reveal His will. We can look at all of creation and know God exists. The world, in all its complexity, beauty, and order did not come together by itself or by accident. Creation shows us the existence of the Creator. The Bible teaches us about His character and His personality.

The confusion and chaos we see in our world are the result of a rejection of God and His truth. Jesus identified Himself as “The Way, the Truth, and the Life,” (John 14:6). Yet, some want to make their own way, determine their own truth, and therefore miss the life God intended for each of us.

The Bible is more than a book of rules, or a moral compass. It is not just literature. The Bible reveals God’s heart. It reveals His plan for time and eternity. The Bible is Truth (John 17:17).

Finding truth is not a mystery. The Bible is truth. The more we read it, letting the Holy Spirit teach us, the better we can know God. The more we know Him, the easier it becomes to trust Him. The Bible enables us to understand human nature and the world we live in. The Bible confirms itself. Read it, study it, live it. Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free (John 8:31-32).

Every word of God proves true. He is a shield to all who come to him for protection.
Proverbs 30:5 NLT
