Enough Time

Time is the one thing no one seems to have enough of. It’s a universal complaint–not enough time to do everything.

So many demands. So many opportunities. There’s the job, and the family, church involvement, kid’s school functions, athletic events, socializing with friends, researching the best vacation spots, visiting local landmarks, reading the latest books, seeing the latest movies, keeping up with the news, getting more education, learning to ski, learning a foreign language, learning a new cooking technique, posting it all on social media, trying to keep up with all the events others are posting on their social media, and on and on.

It seems everyone is captured by an insane schedule. It is easy to try to cram too much into a short period of time, then be late to the next thing because of it. Just thinking about everything that needs doing can be exhausting.

Maybe the real problem is not the time, but the everything. Instead of speeding up to try to accomplish more, and trying to impress others with what is accomplished, what if we slowed down to enjoy the moment more? What if we took the time to pray, and ask God what He created us to be and do?

Time, and what we do with it, is really a heart issue. We can all find enough time to do the things we really want to do. We can concentrate on what is important, by letting go of some things that aren’t.

God has a purpose and a plan for our lives. When our days and years fit into His plan and pace, we find a sense of fulfillment. He has given each of us enough time to do the things He has called us to do.

Jesus, when He walked the earth, encountered great demands on His time. Yet, the Gospels present no evidence of Him hurrying to do anything, or stressing over the amount of things to be done. He always had time for people. He saw their needs. He did nothing outside His Father’s plan (John 5:19). In the three years of His ministry, He accomplished so much that if all the things He did were written down, the whole world would not have room for all the books that would be written (John 21:25).

God has called each of us to various roles. Teacher, doctor, fireman, lawyer, chef, husband or wife, child, parent, student, friend, church member, etc. If He has given us several roles at the same time, He will equip us to carry out each of them as He intends. He doesn’t intend that one role be so all-consuming that it eclipses the other responsibilities He has given us. We just need to seek His pace.

In Colossians 4:17 we read, “Be sure to carry out the ministry the Lord gave you.” (NLT)
The ministry the Lord gave you. I suspect the time crunch most of us feel at one time or another is due to our attempts to do things the Lord never called us to do. When prayer and Bible study surround our decisions about what responsibilities we should accept or reject, God can make clear where we need to focus our attention. As we move steadily along the path God chooses, we may be surprised how much is accomplished.

If we align ourselves with our Father’s will, we will accomplish everything He has planned for us, in His time, in His way, and without stress. I can’t imagine a more fulfilling place to be. There is a reason He tells us to not worry about anything, but pray about everything–the result is peace.

But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus . . . Acts 20:24 NLT

Thanks, Phyllis. I ask God to let me know what He wants me to do, and for the ability to do that. I’m grateful God gave each of us different things to do – that means more people are helped.
