The secret of unshakeable faith is to look beyond life’s difficulties to the character of God Himself. We all experience devastation in one way or another. It could be the devastation of divorce, or the loss of a child. It may show up as betrayal by a friend, the challenge of financial difficulty, or the pain of disappointment. We mourn the deaths of people close to us. However a loss or difficulty comes, it wields a circumstantial blow. If our faith is in our circumstances, it will fail when our circumstances crumble.
Nor can we put our faith in our own performance. The way we live does not make us immune from unsettling hardship. Faithful employees who have given their best service for years can still find themselves out of a job through cutbacks. Living with integrity does not guarantee a person will avoid being a victim of unfairness. Illness still affects people who live healthy lifestyles. It is a misapplication of our faith if we think we can avoid hard times because we try to live in ways that honor God. No matter the form in which hard circumstances come, they can cause a person to wonder where God is. Why did He allow this to happen?
We can’t control life. We can’t even figure it out. Just when we think we have it a little bit figured out, something changes. We can’t control God. Nor can we understand Him completely. Just when we think we have Him figured out, He reveals Himself in a new way.
When something happens to shake our faith, it is good to examine what exactly our faith is in. Circumstances are going to change. We can count on it. If we invest our faith in the way we want our circumstances to be, we set ourselves up for disappointment. God’s character never changes. Unshakeable faith relies on knowing God’s nature, and submitting to His authority.
God is not affected by changing circumstances. He allows changing circumstances in our lives to do His work both in us and through us. We can rest in knowing God is God, and we are not. If we know His character is good and His purposes are wise, we can trust Him when our circumstances are not what we want them to be. Faith knows an all powerful God could change or stop a situation if He chose to do so. Unshakeable faith knows that if He doesn’t, He is still worthy of our trust. Confidence comes in knowing He is working things out for our good. All things. Doubts arise out of our limited understanding of “good.”
Without faith, it is impossible to please God. He delights in those who put their hope in His unfailing love. Abraham was commended because he believed God. The faith chapter in Hebrews doesn’t commend anyone for hoping for better circumstances in this life. They were commended for trusting God despite their circumstances. Understand what faith is. Faith is trusting in the goodness of God despite circumstances that are not good. It is trusting in the unseen reality of God’s presence when the things we can see make no sense. It is trusting in the promises He has given us for the future. It is taking Him at His word.
The Lord’s delight is in those who fear Him, who put their faith in his unfailing love. Psalm 147:11
